SS Rajamouli gave an update on his upcoming film ‘Varanasi’ while attending a release event for ‘RRR’ in France. The director said roughly 80 days of filming remain. The film is still on course for its April 7, 2027 theatrical release.
Rajamouli was at the French release event of RRR when he spoke about Varanasi’s progress. He kept the details limited, partly because his producer was present at the same event.

“My producer is right there, so he wouldn’t let me reveal too much. I can say that we have finished the major action spectacle portions of the film, and we just have small portions which will be wrapped up in 80 days,” he said.
The major action sequences are done. What remains are smaller portions of the film. If the 80-day timeline holds, filming is expected to wrap by September or October 2026. That would leave several months for post-production before the April 2027 release.
What the film is about
Varanasi is described as an epic time-travel adventure. The story centres on a Shiva devotee who goes on a dangerous journey across different periods of time. His goal is to find a lost cosmic artefact of significant power. Along the way he uncovers ancient secrets hidden across centuries. The larger conflict involves a calculating mastermind with plans for global domination.
The premise is large in scale and clearly designed for the kind of spectacle Rajamouli is known for.
The cast and their roles
Mahesh Babu plays the lead character named Rudhra. He has also confirmed that he will portray Lord Rama in one of the film’s episodes. This makes his role a dual one within the film’s time-travel structure.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays a character named Mandakini. Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Kumbha. Further cast announcements have not been made yet.
Single film, not two parts
There was speculation earlier that Varanasi would be split into two parts. Rajamouli has addressed that directly. He confirmed that the film will release as a single project. The expected runtime is around three hours.
The Baahubali 3 question
Rajamouli has also been in the news recently for a separate reason. A documentary series called ‘Baahubali: The Torchbearer’ recently featured Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, and Anushka Sharma hinting at the possibility of a third film in the Baahubali franchise. Rajamouli’s comments in connection with the series led to fresh speculation about Baahubali 3. No official update has been given on that front so far.
